Reading at home!
Here are some tips from a great website (parents.education.govt.nz) for reading at home. You might remember some of these from reading together!
Reading at home
Make reading fun
When they are reading, your child will be working at solving unfamiliar words by themself. If they need help you could ask them to work their way across the word looking for things they know that might help. At this level, reading involves bringing everything they know together to solve problems and build understanding. If they can’t work it out – tell them and carry on with reading.
If you or your child starts to feel stressed by what they’re reading, take a break and read the rest of the story aloud yourself – keep it fun.
Make it real
Find out together
Reading at home
Make reading fun
- Have fun singing along to karaoke songs or playing board games together
- Read to your child every day. You can use your first language
- Have a pile of reading materials available – library books (non-fiction and fiction), kids’ cookery books, simple timetables, newspapers and magazines, catalogues and any other reading that supports your child’s current interest
- Encourage your child to retell favourite stories or parts of stories in their own words. Play card games (you can make the cards yourself) and board games together.

Make it real
- Reading makes more sense if your child can relate it to their own life. Help them to make connections between what they are reading and their own lives and experiences. For example, "that’s a funny story about a grandad – what does your grandad do that makes you laugh?", "We saw a big mountain in that book, what is our mountain called, and where did the name come from?"
- Look for opportunities for your child to read wherever you are – signs, advertising billboards, junk mail, recipes
- Show your child that reading is fun and important to you by letting them see you reading magazines, books, newspapers.
- Visit the library often and help your child to choose books about topics that interest them
- Talk with older people or kaumātua in your family about interesting stories and people from your child’s past that you could find out more about together
- Ask your child questions (and support them to find the answers) to widen their reading experiences. For example, "What’s the quickest biscuit recipe?", "What time is the next bus to town?"
- Help your child with any words that they don’t understand – look them up together in the dictionary if you need to.

ANZAC Trip Writing
ANZAC Trip by Akol
On Wednesday the 3rd of June we went to Te Papa and the National War Memorial. Me and my group were with Tavie’s mum. We went to Te Papa. I was scared because there was a video of a man with a gun and it looked like he was going to shot me. I learnt a lot about World War One. Next we went on the bus to the National War Memorial Park. Will signed up for World War One and he got shot on the arm. Then we went to the tower to put the wreath. After that we went back to school and played some games. The bell rang and I went home for a nap. I learnt war is not nice because you could die.

On June the 3rd I woke up and got ready for school. Mrs Brown checked for a good lunch. We got on the bus very quickly. “Bang” went the door we started to go. I felt tired on the bus. When we got to Te Papa we ate some food. I learnt more about ANZAC and I saw statues. There was blood on the statues. Next we went to the National War Memorial Park. We ate lunch. We went inside. I saw a big tank. We smelt inside, it was hot and smelly. I saw a big cannon. I saw Will he got shot on his arm. Will was a soldier in world war one. Next we went back on the bus. When we got back to school we played some games. After that we went home.

On Wednesday the 3rd of June we went on a trip to Te Papa and the National War Memorial. The whole school, parents and teachers went. I learnt about Anzac and the first world war. We got out of the bus and we ate morning tea. After that we went inside Te Papa. I saw big statues of soldiers and blood. I saw guns too. I was scared. I told Angela I was scared and she gave me a hug. Next we went to the National War Memorial. I saw a big tank it smelt like stinky socks. We saw the unknown soldier, he is a New Zealand soldier who died in war. When we went back to school I said “that was an amazing trip but I am tired!”Tuesday, 16 June 2015
ANZAC Paintings
We have been working so hard this term with Mrs. Brown.
We have been learning about putting together a collage using printing. We have printed different shapes and used different materials to help us put together a collage of ANZAC.
In the next few weeks we are going to put our collages together and you will be able to see that lots of cultures were represented in World War One.
Here are some photos of us working hard.
